Travelling with a free-running herd is at the heart of this Journey.
The herd travels with us as we leave the farmland behind and move through the mountains, valleys and volcanic landscapes of Snæfellsnes.
Riders experience the changing terrain together with the herd, moving between tölt, trot and a more leisurely pace depending on the landscape.
As we approach the coast, the character of the Journey changes again.
Along Löngufjörur, the herd travels ahead of the riding group while the Atlantic forms the backdrop. The horses move through the shallow waters of the shoreline and across the firm sands of the beach. The combination of open space, free-running horses and the long coastline gives this part of the Journey a distinctive sense of freedom.
On the final riding day, we leave the free-running herd behind and enjoy a single-horse ride along the beach, giving us a different way to experience the coastline and the Icelandic horse.
Smaller Groups. Bigger Herds. We deliberately travel with a generous number of horses for the size of the group. This allows riders to change horses regularly and experience their different characters and abilities, while sharing the work between the horses throughout the Journey.
Riding with the herd requires confidence, awareness and good control at different speeds. The pace can be lively, and riders should be comfortable spending several hours in the saddle over consecutive days.
Prior experience riding with a loose herd is not required. Our guides introduce the way we ride and manage the herd along the route.
Snæfellsnes – Magical and Mysterious is designed for intermediate to advanced riders who are comfortable spending several hours in the saddle and riding across varied terrain.
The terrain changes considerably throughout the Journey.
We begin across grassy plains and through fertile farmland, with opportunities for tölt and trot. As we approach the mountains, the terrain becomes rockier and the pace becomes more leisurely.
Mountain passes, colourful hillsides, fertile rivers and volcanic valleys form part of the route before we descend towards the Atlantic coast.
River crossings and ancient lava landscapes are also part of the Journey, creating a varied riding experience throughout the five days.
When we reach Löngufjörur, the rhythm changes again.
The firm sand provides ideal terrain for long-distance tölting. We follow the coastline with the herd moving ahead, splashing through the shallow waters of the shore while Snæfellsjökull stands in the distance.
The final riding day brings another change of rhythm. We ride individual horses along the beach, enjoying a more carefree day of tölting with views towards the glacier.
Riders should be confident riding independently at all paces and comfortable adapting to varied terrain and changing conditions.
Accommodation and board are included throughout the Journey. There is a breakfast buffet and guests make their sandwiches for lunch. Dinners are hearty and home-cooked meals.
At Stóri-Kálfalækur, guests have access to a large kitchen and spacious dining room.
The farmhouse provides a comfortable place to gather at the beginning and end of the Journey, while the route itself takes riders away from the farm and into the mountains, volcanic landscapes and along the Atlantic coast.
